On-screen and fashion representation for women ages 50 and up.

In today’s video, the Cindy Rose aka the Bombshell Nurse weighs in on if women ages 50 and up are being represented well on-screen and in fashion. Going in depth on her thoughts, experiences and beliefs on the subject.

Topics Include:

  • Observations of representation in the industry
  • Industry mistakes and opportunities at the door
  • What is marketed to your age group?

Do you feel like there is enough women in the 50+ age group being represented in film and modeling?

“No, I do not. I don’t think people of my age group are represented very well at all. I don’t see people like me in film, in magazines, modeling, you know, being sought after, which I think is a huge mistake in the advertising world, or even in film and whatever to be represented.”

Why do you feel it’s a mistake for the industry and what opportunities do you see?

Women my age, by this time, typically have more money than women who are younger. And I actually think there’s a huge void from ages roughly 50 to 70 and I don’t think that there’s many of us out there being shown. There’s a good representation with ages 40, 45 and early 50s. I think women are very heralded after they’re 70, 75, and there’s still working, still pushing, still representing, well for that age group. But with our age group, I don’t know if they haven’t figured this out yet. They can’t categorize us maybe, which I think is a great thing, because most women who are 55 plus are done raising their children. They are done and done doing that sort of role, and now we are getting to express ourselves again.

How can you compare your personal experience with this scenario?

I always love fashion. Pink has been my favorite color since I was a little girl, I’ve never outgrown it, I like being a girly girl but i’m not afraid to get dirty. I sweat every day when I work out and i’m not afraid to go out and go on a hike and get dirty and put on boots. But I also love being very feminine. But of course with raising four kids and being a nurse for 35 years, you give your life away to other things and there’s other responsibilities. I had to change who I was, I couldn’t walk around in dresses or heels every day or have the time for full makeup and that sort of thing. So you kind of do different things which is perfectly fine and it’s a natural thing and you should give your life to the things that are important to you, cause thats what you have. But now that I am older, I am kind of rediscovering it. Over the last few years, I’ve rediscovered who I want to continue to be as I age. And fashion was really huge part of it and I like to do that and I’m not done taking care of myself.

What is it you see marketed the most to your age group?

They seem to do a lot of anti-aging, which is fine but I want to age gracefully. I don’t need to have the “you must look younger in order to be relevant“, that’s not true. I’ve earned every wrinkle that I have. I’ve earned every age spot that I have. I’ve earned all this gray hair so I don’t need to cover that up if I don’t want to. So I think there’s a whole world of opportunity out there for women between the ages of 50 and 70, 75. I think that area needs to be much more represented.
